The Exo Suit is one of the first truly original models to come out of LEGO Ideas. It captures the look and feel of the LEGO Classic Space series, with two beautiful looking minifigs in green space colours, a man and a woman. The suit itself has a great use of LEGO pieces, to give it a great retro sci fi feel to it, and the designer really has gone out to capture the right look.
The suit also has a robotic turtle, and a platform with two yellow canisters, that can be picked up by the exo suit’s hands.
The model was released in 2014, and captured the hearts of many LEGO fans as being a great call back to the original line. I think it has helped revive an interest in Classic Space, including an interest in different coloured space minifigs.
A great detail is that the instruction booklet includes little photos of some of the details and what they are. For example a photo shows the back with two pipes, explaining it is part of the power generation or communications.
With 321 pieces the model is incredibly detailed. The minifigs, turtle and platform are easy enough to build. With the exo suit taking up the majority of the build.
It took me nearly 40 minutes to build, with some shortcuts available because of legs or arms being duplicates. A few of the more fiddly pieces were challenging to place, mostly from trying to work out exactly where they should go.
The detail in the exo suit is undoubtedly the highlight of the model. Clever use of pieces give the legs extra detail and shape. A really great example in how LEGO pieces can be used beyond their original design.
The model is a little unsteady, and moving the legs causes it to wobble or move around rather unsmoothly. But I do like that the legs are double jointed so it can stand quite tall. Despite the unsteadiness of the model when the legs are moved, the model is strong and well designed. It never feels like it will fall apart, even if it might fall over.
I like how the arms are built, including the detail of using a barrel on the forearm and the claws for the hands.
The model is sadly now out of production, so you are unlikely to find it for the original listed price. However if you see it online, or for sale I do recommend grabbing one. If not to build but to have, as it will undoubtedly become a collectors item.
